A veteran detective in a large St. Louis area police department is sexually harassed by his co-workers and supervisors by repeatedly having sexually explicit, homosexual photos, posters, and memes placed on and around his office—the place the detective would routinely meet with potential witnesses and crime victims. After complaining to the head of the police department’s Detective’s Bureau, as well as filing a formal complaint with the HR Department, the detective is accused of “poor work performance,” removed from the department’s prestigious homicide division, and assigned to investigate cases normally assigned to entry-level detectives. As a result of the police department’s refusal to take any action to remedy the situation, the detective files a lawsuit alleging sexual harassment and unlawful retaliation.
